Starburst Jelly Bean issue!

I know I haven't been on here for awhile, so HEEEEEYYY! But I was appalled by a recent purchase at Target. I normally check expiration dates on food and beverages because I have had bad luck. Recently I went to Target to purchase Easter candy to fill up some Easter eggs, I had a coupon for $1 off any two packages of Startburst or Jolly Rancher jelly beans. So I was stoked! I buy two packages of Starburst and head home.

Later today I was trying to open one of the packages and seen the numbers 2006. I immediately stopped trying to open it and looked at the numbers more closely. Low and behold this package of candy expired February 2006....2006!!!!!!!!!!! 6 years old, really. Trying to poison our kids eh?

I went in tonight to exchange for new candy and seen their entire stock of Starburst Jelly Beans was in fact expired (including sour and tropical flavors). Oh and the Tropical expired in January of 2005. So I grab Jolly Rancher ones (after checking the date) and head up to Customer Service. I explain to the cashier I would like to exchange due to the Starburst being expired and told her the entire 5...FIVE...rows were all expired. Her response (In a dull tone) "Oh okay....".

So please be aware of this issue. Kids do get sick from eating too much candy but please, lets try not poisoning them.

  1. Hi there! A friend of mine posted your blog post on Pinterest, and it caught my eye, as I work at Target Headquarters and the Candy department is on my floor. I had them research the issue, and I believe this is a misunderstanding.

If you look at the expiration date of these items they are in the foramt "10 OCT 12 006". The spaces are small, making the final digits look like 12006, which is where I believe the confusion is coming from. The 006 is not part of the date, the item really has an expiration date of 10-Oct-12.

I'd be happy to email you an example photo that shows this.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Cory!

Holy cow I haven't talked to you in forever, this is Tabitha!

Anyways, I discussed it over the phone with the Target here and they apologized. I went in and we went over the packages and low and behold they were all expired. I have a picture somewhere on my phone with the date. They said 08 FEB 06 or something of that nature.

Evidently this Target just had these sitting in back from last year and didn't see why they would have expired. After contacting someone regarding them they stated that expired jelly beans will do no harm if eaten. Slightly scary in my eyes since I have a 2 year old.

I assume no one has gotten sick or it would be all over the news. I am just a tad bit of a freak when it comes to expiration dates.

Thank you for the heads up!
